Pico has little interest in feather toys or catnip-filled mice unless I hold them in the light and cast their shadow on the wall. I catch her staring at the wall almost daily, mesmerized by the shadows of swaying trees or cars racing by.
Lucy, however, prefers to watch the real thing.

I saw your flikr account, pico is famous!
Hi, I just saw Pico's lick spot on your Flickr account. My cat had the same problem several years ago -- the vet said it was probably stress because my other cat had recently died. The vet had me administer anti-depressants to Timmy (my cat with the lick spot). He quit for awhile and then was back at it and licking it rawer than ever. Took him to the vet again -- this time the vet suggested a biopsy. It turned out it was basal cell carcinoma -- cancer -- so he had to get surgery. He recovered and lived for another four and a half years. He was 18 when he kicked the bucket.
Aww...I need to take her to the vet asap. I'm going to try switching her diet back to dry food. She only started licking after we started feeding her wet food and monitoring her daily intake.
Thanks for your insight, Emily.
She definitely could benefit from an anti-depressant, as she has aggression issues, too, but I don't know how I would be able to give her medicine daily without her biting my arm off.
Why does owning a cat have to be so difficult?
