tra selhtrow

Hi, guys. I haven't been blown away by new art in some time, so when I see something I like, I gotta share. I receive updates from Tiny Showcase previewing the work to be released the following day. When looking at the site, I noticed a another piece by Seattle artist Grant Barnhart, also known as Tra Selhtrow (worthless art?). Check out his work through this gallery, which also showcases some other fantastic artists.

lunch last week

I did manage to take a little break last week to meet Britta and Zackai for lunch. It snowed five minutes later.

It's been so long...

I bet you were wondering if I would ever return, right?

Do you remember those bowling pictures I posted over a week ago? I didn't know it then, but I caused major stress to my lower back. It could be sciatica. I'm not sure, as I refuse to see a chiropractor or physician (with the exception of Dr. P). So, ever since that dreadful night, I've been hobbling around with hunched back.

Simple activities, such as walking around our neighborhood or standing while preparing food, have become extremely distressing. Plus, sitting in front of a computer all day doesn't help the situation.

Anyhow, this is my excuse, along with work overload, for the lack of posts. Alright?

cirque eloize

A perk of working for an agency are the occasional free tickets to local Arts Festival shows. I was just handed some for the Cirque Eloize show tomorrow night! I saw this troop a few years back and was blown away.

sing it!

Every downtown has its eccentric characters which give the city flavor. We have "singing lady," who at 12:30 every afternoon, walks down City Hall Avenue flailing her arms about and singing to the best of her capacity. Her volume is so loud that I can hear her from our 4th floor office.

when designers go bowling...

it always turns into a photoshoot. AIGA had a bowling tournament last night, with our team falling in last place (i think). It took me a while to remember how to roll the ball down the lane - it's all about the spin, baby!

FYI - I actually didn't wear all the wool garb while playing, just that ratty sweater everyone's tired of seeing.

let there be craft

A few ladies are coming over tonight for some craftin' and tea. Do you have a project you're working on? Come on over.

I think I'll work on this guy. I'm finally getting close to the finish. Too bad it's full of flaws.

Started a new painting this weekend. The most intimidating stage: the completely blank canvas. But since it was 75 degrees all weekend, I was able to open the windows and get some fresh air.

A detail of my subject.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

one more thing

I wanted to share this - a local fellow who shares my same cynicism.
bottles

I hauled these down from the attic the other day with the idea that I would display them.

They belonged to my grandmother who passed away a few years ago. The bottles were found in a wooden crate stored on the top shelf of her linen closet. I'm not sure why she felt the need to hold on to them...perhaps her 5 foot stature just kept them out of view for so many years.

Their typed labels state such descriptions as, "for Mrs. Perry's baby" and "for Mr. Perry's cough." To give you an idea of age, the youngest child is over 60 years old.

I especially find the 666 label intriguing. An exorcism elixir? To combat demonic possession, please take two tablespoons daily.

The pungent odor has prohibited me from displaying them. They're covered in layers upon layers of dust, plus some bottles still contain the original medicine. I'll have to set aside a day to gently clean them without damaging the labels, which have become extremely brittle with age.

Another day.

where the deer and the squirrels play

This is what I've been up to the last couple of nights. Our room doesn't get much natural light, so it's difficult to photograph. Brown wall is all matte paint (varnish look is glare).

the before shot:

How it was executed: flat latex brown rolled on wall first. After dry (I waited a couple nights to be sure), I penciled in the general outlines using a straight edge. I then mixed a small quantity of gray paint to leftover brown to tint (3 varying shades). I then just started painting away using mostly 1-2 inch brushes and smaller for limbs.

What I would have done differently: I didn't work from a plan so one of the darker limbs overlaps a lighter trunk which distorts the perspective. It is supposed to look flat and graphic, so I don't think it matters that much, but it still irritates me. I have a tendency to dive into projects.

Why: Because I wanted the look of wallpaper without having to commit or pay for it. The deer head was a recent gift and was lost when hung above our headboard in the large expanse of taupe (taupe - not pink as appears on screen). Adding the trees created an environment for the head as well as draws the eye up, making our ceiling appear higher. Plus, the dark tones separate the wall from our little platform bed headboard.

What's next: Repaint adjacent wall taupe. Original plan was to have the one brown wall behind our headboard. We painted before we purchased the bed. We then assembled bed and realized it wouldn't fit on intended wall, so we moved the bed to the taupe wall and hoped for the best.

76 degrees today

So I thought I would let the squirrels out of the house for a while.

tea for two

just a quick note to let you know I'm planning a Grey Gardens tea party to be held later in the month. I have the recently released DVD of extra footage from the original documentary, so this little gathering will center around the screening.

Prerequisite: you have to have seen the Grey Gardens documentary. Like most cult films, it's not for everyone.

This advance notice should give everyone interested enough time to view the original documentary. I have a copy if you would like to borrow or you can rent from Naro Video or Netflix.

More details to come.

resolutions

every year it's the same 'ol thing - exercise more and eat better. but this year i've been giving it some thought since this is also the year i hit the big three zero. i have until september, so i'm in the process of making a check list of feats/skills I would like to have accomplished and/or aquired.

Resolutions:
1. EXERCISE: not just exercise more, but actually exercise some. This body is genetics and diet alone and areas are starting to morph. Everyone older than me keeps saying, "just wait until you're thirty" in regards to body image. Hmm..can't wait. Plus, I need my chin back which has been in hiding since I ceased pilates.

2. EAT BETTER: Bobby is a bad influence on me. First turkey and now chicken. Every single night - enough said.

3. READ AT LEAST THIRTY MINUTES A DAY (BOOKS - NOT MAGAZINES): I'm hoping to work towards an hour as suggested by GS, who takes personal offense to insufficient list of books read in the last year. In Cold Blood - took seven months. I'm starting tonight with a new book (suggested by GS, too) - "Perfume" by Partrick Suskind.

4. CURB MY SPENDING and REEVALUATE MY BUDGET: My first task is to form a real budget with the help of good 'ol Dad and Quicken. Secondly, I'm simplifying, ie. not renewing magazine subscriptions, avoiding the mall at all costs, and becoming the frugal lady I used to be. I also need to figure out a way to save up for the Canon Rebel XTI.

5. SUPPORT LOCAL ECONOMY: This relates to the above resolution by avoiding the mall and simplifying. No more Amazon one-clicks and impulsive iTunes purchases. I'm going to get SOME exercise and march to Relative Theory or Prince Books. I can apply this resolution to privately owned restaurants, too. I still have alot of guilt concerning my Netflix membership and Naro Video, but one's gotta take babysteps. Also, I feel guilty concerning a recent iTunes purchase recommended by Dave from RTR. Eeessshh. I suck.

6. DRINK LESS: I'm by no means an alcoholic, but am in the habit of having one glass of wine or beer after work to unwind or along with dinner. This makes me more tired and less productive. I will substitute with tea from now on...at least half the time.

7. I WILL TRY TO REMAIN MORE POSITIVE: Someone today said I poo-pooed every idea since the start of the new year. Not a great start, huh? The statement wasn't true, but sometimes you gotta just smile and nod...something I have trouble doing insincerely.

8. I WILL DEVOTE MORE TIME TO ART: I haven't painted on canvas in some time and that's a shame...no, a crime.

9. I WILL TRY TO CLEAN THE CAT BOX MORE: well...yeah. stinky poo.

10. I WILL MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO APPEAR LESS SOCIALLY AWKWARD: which really might be even more awkward - kinda contrived, you know? Smile and nod. Hugs not handshakes.

11. I WILL STOP OBSESSING ABOUT MY HOUSE: relates to the simplification of my spending habits.

12. I WILL STOP OBSESSING IN GENERAL. Oh yeah, and the paranoid delusions - those gotta stop as well.

13. I WILL STOP TALKING/THINKING/DAYDREAMING ABOUT ACCOMPLISHING THE ACTIVITIES/TRAITS LISTED BELOW AND WILL PROACTIVELY WORK TOWARDS ACHIEVING THESE GOALS:

LIST OF THINGS TO HAVE ACCOMPLISHED BY AGE THIRTY - THE NEXT 9 MONTHS:
1. Learn Spanish - not fluent by age thirty, but basic conversational skills (like I had in junior high)
2. Learn how to embroider and crochet well
3. Learn how to partner dance with my husband - and not thrash about rhythmically.
4. Update my portfolio, which means creating my own webpage. No template blog - the real deal.
5. Update etsy account and sell mad product. Design skills=product=profit=Canon Rebel for moi.
6. Hmm...I'm sure I'll update this shortly.

Anything you would change or add?

christmas gift from JG:

how to make a cake

first make sure you don't put enough flour in the pan. The cake should stick to the bottom nicely. Pry cake loose with an icing knife and then run the knife along the perimeter of the cake so that you cut the bottom edge at a 45 degree angle. Place cakes on a decorative cake stand. Wedge missing pieces between layers.

Apply frosting generously.

Add sprinkes. Half the container will do nicely.

If you use icing from the previous year, you will need to apply much pressure when squeezing. Make sure you don't center the number, as symmetry is so last year. Add candles.

Voila!!
